The neighbourhood was built around 1900 and is enclosed by Hobbemakade, Johannes Vermeerstraat, Pieter de Hoochstraat and Ruysdaelkade. Because this area was like an "island" wedged between busy streets and water, it soon acquired an isolated character.
The name refers to the infamous French prison island "Île du Diable" (Devil's Island), where convicts were held in solitary confinement. In the Amsterdam vernacular, this part of Old South was also jokingly called so, because in the early years it was a somewhat closed and poorer neighbourhood.
Nowadays, of course, the nickname is mostly charming - Devil's Island is now considered one of the most popular and quiet residential areas in Oud-Zuid, with Museumplein, the Concertgebouw and the Vondelpark within walking distance.
